Look At These Extra-ordinary Beautiful Fish: 5 Amazing Fish in the World
Something Fishy!
Did you know that the largest fish on Earth is the whale shark, 20 meters long and weigh up to 34 tonnes?
And the smaller fish, discovered in the island of Sumatra in Indonesia, called ”Paedocypris progenetica" is just 8 mm in length
Surely the oldest fish fossil is the "Haikouichthys ercaicunensis", a small animal like a fish that lived in China nearly 500 million years ago.
The fish can take many forms and colors which are really amazing, unusual and stunning, touching heights of beauty and high perfection that it can leave you breathless. The tropical fish that live in the warm Caribbean seas, are often the most visible and therefore most affected by human intervention.
Today I share with you 5 of the fish species that are considered as the most beautiful and striking in nature.
White Throated Surgeonfish
The white throated surgeon fish belongs to the family Acanthuridae, which includes 81 species of saltwater fish and are commonly known as Surgeonfish.
It lives in tropical coral reefs of all oceans and in the Red Sea and is one of the most respected and sought-after surgeon fish ever. They have a very solitary nature, independent and aggressive enough, not accepting the intrusion of other fish in their territory.
Surgeon fish owe their name to an appreciable defense weapon that can be seen on both sides of the caudal peduncle. It is a kind of limestone retractable blade and extremely sharp (such as scalpels), which exhibit in case of danger.
Trivia: In Pixar's animated film "Finding Nemo", released in 2003, the famous fish named Dory , was a surgeon fish.
Discus fish
The discus fish is an extraordinarily elegant fish and is considered as the "king of aquariums”.
These fish inhabit the great rivers of the Amazon rain forest, especially areas where the water is stagnant, with little vegetation, and a temperature high enough. Can reach up to 15 cm in length and this is a peaceful fish that is non-violent towards other species also.
Lives in groups whose internal structure is governed by a hierarchy. The leader is the one with more bright colors, without vertical bands. Within the group of discus are generally formed of couples, and as soon as the eggs (laid between the leaves of the vegetation) hatch, the body of the parents begins to secrete slimy mucus that coats their body fully and that is the sole source of food for babies.
Mandarin fish
The Mandarin fish is a saltwater fish belonging to the family Callionymidae (one of the lesser known species), and is probably the most colorful and vibrant fish in nature.
Its plumage is spectacular: the background color changes from green to orange (slightly red on the dorsal and caudal). Throughout the body, including fins, is decorated with dots and curved lines of intense blue. The pectoral fins are blue. It is a social animal that lives in small groups.
Its maximum size is about 10 cm to 6 cm for the male and the female. They live in coral reefs of the Pacific Ocean.
The Mandarin fish is no problem to other fish, but males of the same species are very aggressive with each other, as they are instinctively inclined to defend their territory.
Dragon Fish
The scorpion fish, with the true scientific name Pterois volitans, is also called lion fish or dragon fish and belongs to the family of Scorpaenidae.
Its origin is the Red Sea, the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean, but you can find it also in Japan and Australia. Lives at the bottom rocky and coral reef up to about 40-50 feet deep.
It is a fish of extraordinary beauty, very colorful, sturdy, relatively sociable, adapted to live with almost all other reef fish and with their fellows. They can reach up to 38 inches in length.
The Lionfish is unmistakable because of its poisonous spines on the body, which is generally used to paralyze their prey.
These spikes can be quite dangerous for the man (fortunately rarely fatal), since this fish has glands that produce a venom capable of causing severe reactions, ranging from blistering, necrosis and paralysis of the injured, ischemia and syncope.
Moorish Idol
The Moorish Idol is widespread in the coral reefs of the Indian Ocean and the Pacific Ocean and is often misidentified as a Fish Banner.
The average size of young Moorish idols reach about 18 cm, while adults can reach 20 - 24 cm. Most of those are observed in the wild as they live in solitude, but sometimes can form pairs and rarely even small groups.
The Moorish Idol fish is a quite peaceful, quite shy and can live easily with other species of peaceful nature.
It has become famous because of Konrad Lorenz (1903-1989) an Austrian zoologist, ethologist, and ornithologist., who studied their behavior in the aquarium, focusing in particular on the duels between males.
The moorish idol feeds on algae, crustaceans and molluscs. Usually these fish, being unpredictable nature, do not accept the food offered, and most often let themselves die of hunger.
